The 17/18U’s first Volleyball Alberta Premier featuring the southern Alberta teams was played at Rally Pointe in Calgary on February 9 and 10, 2019. Head coach Phil Boldon and assistant coaches Jill Lynch and Carl Barredo are all returning from last year, as well as the younger players from last year’s combined 17/18 team (Johanna Dixon, Gabrielle Ralph, Addison Glanville, Eryn Gogal and Alia Nielsen). Joining this year’s team is Lara Ironside, Shelby Eberts, Megan Tudball, Sharaya Morrison, Sadie Clark, Kaylie Ardolino, and Lydia Maximnuk.

Day 1 pool play saw the girls undefeated. They won their games against Apex Alpine 18U, Wham 17U, and Canuck 18U. Unfortunately they came up against some hard serving to lose their crossover against Mount Royal University (White) U18 16-25 and 19-25 to place them in Division 2 for the next Premier.

Early Sunday morning at 8:00 am, the girls came out strong against Ace of Hearts (Red).  It was close at first, but the Selects won the game in two sets.  They then played Mount Royal University U17 for the top of the division. After coming back from an eight point deficit in the first set, 403 won 25-23. The next match was also incredibly close, with both teams battling point for point. MRU won 24-26, taking the game to a third set. These evenly matched teams kept it close and exciting the entire way, with 403 finally taking the win 17-15. After only a few minutes to fuel up, the girls were back on the court playing Ace of Clubs (Black). Strong blocks and serving saw Ace winning both sets, placing 403 into 10th place.

It was fantastic to watch these girls play together as a team; we are looking forward to seeing more exciting action at the next Premier!
