The 15U Volleyball Alberta Provincial Championships were played at the Crescent Pointe Field House at Aldersyde.  It was an intense weekend, with the girls facing the top teams in Alberta to claim the bronze medal.

Day One

The round robin games in the power pool started with the 403 Selects playing NAVC from Edmonton.  The first set started with 403 playing focused but nervous, facing an eight-point deficit.  They regained some ground but lost the first set 23-25. Set two started out shaky as well, but the girls persevered and won the second set 25-19 and the third 15-7.  They faced the Dinos in their second game, and came out victorious; they first they won the first 25-16, and a hard-fought second 26-24. Their third game was against the U of A Pandas, with whom the girls had just spent the previous weekend at a training camp. 403 won the first set 25-17 but lost the second 23-25. The Pandas were up 2-8 at the switch and won the game 10-15, putting 403 in second place and facing central Alberta’s Rage for the all-important crossover. A well-placed hit won the first set for Purple 25-18. The second set had just started when a power outage caused a quick timeout. Again, a Purple hit won the set 25-20, putting 403 into the top of the division.

Day Two

The quarterfinal game was played against the Panthers from Southern Alberta. The first set was a very solid game, with both teams playing well, but 403 coming out victorious 25-20. Set two started out with the girls facing a strong serving, resulting in a 7-0 lead for the Panthers. The girls continued to struggle. Subs were made at 8-15, and a missed Panther serve helped the girls recover a bit. Both teams continued to play an intense game with 403 making a huge comeback and holding the Panthers at 24 for 4 points, but unfortunately losing 22-25.

Set three started out with both teams going point for point. 403 pulled ahead but the Panthers tied it up 5-5. The switch saw Purple ahead 8-6. The team finally seemed to come together and played some fantastic volleyball, defeating the formidable Panthers 15-7.  The semifinals saw purple come up against the U of C Dinos again. 403 kept a very marginal lead until a serving run to make the score 15-8. The Selects continued to dominate with smart hits and strong serves to win the set 25-14.  The second set saw the girls down 7-15, when subs were made, and 403 made a valiant comeback from 10-21, but ultimately lost 22-25. Set three kept the momentum going, but the Dinos called an effective timeout at 7-3, and tied it at 7-7.  A big hit for Purple saw the switch at 8-7.  The duration of the game was intense, and point-for-point, but unfortunately, Purple lost 15-17, leading them to the bronze medal match.

The finals were against the Rattlers from Medicine Hat where 403 won the first set 25-21. The second set was another close game, with Purple finding themselves behind 7-12. A timeout was called but 403 continued to trail 17-20. They tied it up at 20 then again at 21 where they came together and won 25-21 to win the bronze medal, and a confirmed spot in Division 1 at Nationals!

It was an all-around fantastic weekend for the girls, coaches, and parents as it was an honor to be able to watch the high level of skill the girls have been acquiring all season. Can’t wait for Nationals!
