Phil has been around the game of volleyball for a number of years both as a player, coach and referee. He is a physical education teacher for Calgary Board of Education and has been teaching for 25 plus years coaching both boys and girls ages 12-18 in a variety of sports. His current school, Lord Beaverbrook has been in the divisional championship for the past three years, taking home the banner 2 years ago. Additionally, he coached for various clubs including SAIT men, Canuck, Dinos and Peak.

Coaching with those clubs, he has won 3 Provincial Championships, 1 bronze and a second place finish at Nationals. Phil grew up in the Maritimes where he played for UNB winning the AUAA and competed at the CIS, where he was named an “All Canadian.” Additionally, he played for the Canada games team where they had a fourth place finish, which is still New Brunswick’s best place finish.

He also spent 2 summers playing on the Junior National Team living in Toronto and Quebec City. He later moved to Calgary in 1980 to play for the Senior National team for a total of 2 years, and then played for U of C and UBC. In 2015 Phil was inducted into the New Brunswick hall of fame for his contribution to volleyball as a player. His love for the sport has brought him to 403 hoping to helpathletes excel in the sport. Phil likes to challenge athletes to excel at the sport while maintaining a positive and fun learning environment.

He is passionate about working with athletes and focusing on leadership skills on and off the court is paramount. Additionally, mental toughness and volleyball IQ are key to becoming better players. He is very excited about the opportunity to coach some fantastic and skilled young women and work with some amazing coaches.

Phil has his level 1 NCCP and is working on his level 2 coaching certification. In his spare time, he loves to spend time with his family travelling, hiking, camping and skiing. Maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle is paramount to him and he loves to instill this attitude in athletes. He is looking forward to the 18U 2018 season.

    Carl Barredo - Assistant Coach

      Before coming to Canada, Carl coached in the Philippines for 16 years at the University of St. La Salle where he earned his degree in Business Management. He was also a part of the coaching staff from their volleyball association (NOVA) that goes to some parts of the Philippines to teach the game of volleyball to kids and train aspiring coaches. Carl believes in developing an all-around player. He is an FIVB and NCCP Level 1 coach. Aside from volleyball, Carl loves to play table tennis and basketball. During his free time he goes cycling with his wife. He is excited to work with the the players of the U18 team and the coaches and learn from them too.

        Jill Lynch - Assistant Coach

          Jill has played volleyball for 9 years and has a passion for coaching young athletes through her experience as a gymnastics coach. Most recently, she played 3 years for the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Newfoundland and Labrador, where she obtained her Bachelor of Commerce degree.  The 2018 season will be Jill’s first season in the 403 Selects community and she couldn’t be more excited to share her knowledge and develop as a coach and mentor.
