Day 1

Premier #1 took place this past weekend, with the 17U Selects opening up pool play against Sylvan Lake Volleyball Club Wave 17U. It’s fair to say everyone was cold due to the extremely cold temperatures outside, and while the girls took a bit of time to warm up during the match, they emerged victorious with 25-18 and 25-12 wins. Next up was the newly-formed club of Medicine Hat Volleyball Club 18U, who had just taken the Dinos 17U to 3 sets. The talented MHVC squad took control early on in the first set. The Selects adapted to their attack and fought back before dropping a close 1st set 23-25. The 2nd and 3rd sets were very well-played by both teams, and the Selects were able to prevail 25-21, 15-8. The 2 losses by MHVC dropped them into the Blue Playoff, which they ultimately won. Congratulations to MHVC on their strong finish.

The final pool match was against Dinos 17U. The Selects were unable to get ahead in this one and dropped 2 sets 22-25, 17-25, putting us 2nd in our pool. Due to the uneven number of teams in the black playoff, this meant we had to play a match against Panthers 17U to get into the top 16 crossover. The Selects started out quickly, winning the 1st set 25-12. The momentum continued into the 2nd set before the Coaldale squad regrouped and rallied hard. The Selects continued to battle but ultimately dropped the set 22-25. The Panthers were able to maintain this momentum shift into the 3rd set, taking it with a score of 15-12. Unfortunately, this dropped the Selects into the 17-20 bracket for Day 2. These losses always provide great lessons and learning opportunities, so after some debrief the girls went home to rest for Day 2.

Day 2

Day 2 moved the Selects to the JV Centre for their remaining 2 matches against the other teams who missed out on the crossover game. The first match was against Calgary’s Rebels 18U team, and the Selects returned to form with a solid 25-17, 25-14 victory. The final match saw the Selects face another new club, Calgary’s NWVC Wolves 18U, with the Selects emerging victorious (25-14, 25-15). This resulted in a 17th place finish overall in 17/18U Premier 1. Moving ahead, the team experienced many positives to build upon and learned a great deal from their first competition.

Thanks to the athletes, coaches, opponents, officials and parents for an enjoyable weekend. The Selects’ next tournament will be the National Invitational Tournament Triple Crown in Kansas City Feb 15-18 where they will participate in college camps and take on the top teams in the USA.
