Day 1

16U’s second premiere was held in Edmonton and 403 played the other top-ranked teams at the University of Alberta Education Gym. They opened the tournament by winning two close sets against SPVC (South Peace Volleyball Club). The whole team contributed to the win and the girls settled in for the day. Game two of the power pool was played against Dinos. The 403’s were on fire for the first set and held the lead throughout for a 25-15 win.  Dinos rallied back in the second and took a commanding lead. The Selects regained some ground and came back from an 11-18 deficit but lost 26-28. Purple’s momentum carried into the third and they won that set 15-6, winning the match.  Pool play wrapped up with a game against the Queens winning in two close sets. The crossover was against PARK and the Selects won handily, advancing to the top eight.

Day 2

Day 2 quarterfinals felt like déjà vu as the Selects met the Canucks again for the second time in a premiere quarter-final. The first set was a battle until 22-22. Time-out was called and the Selects came out of the timeout determined to win, which they did 25-22. The next set was well played and the Selects won and advanced to the semi-finals.  The semifinal game was an exciting matchup against the Pandas. Both teams play a similar style of volleyball and it was a tight game with the Selects winning 25-23. The second set found the Selects fighting back from a 3-8 deficit and they battled hard to earn their way to the final match beating the Pandas 25-19 in the second set.

403 fell short in game 1 of the final, losing the first set against SPVC 23-25. They worked hard to come back in the second but SPVC prevailed and the Selects brought home the silver medal, matching their performance from last year.

Overall it was a fantastic tournament, which showed the teams’ strengths and let them know where they can be more effective.  The level of volleyball was unbelievable and very enjoyable to watch!  Can’t wait for Premier #3!
