Day One

The 403 Selects 16U’s provincial tournament was held Saturday, May 4th at Edmonton’s Saville Center, and started out with a bang. The Selects were on fire and won the first set of their pool play 25-13. Some tough serving and aggressive attack rattled the Medicine Hat Rattlers. However, they were strong competitors and fought hard in the second. The Selects took control of the game and won with a score of 25-21. The girls ended up placing first in their pool after then losing to Calgary’s Canuck Black in three, and winning a very close, intense game against the U of A Pandas in three, where there was some unbelievable defence on both sides.

403 matched up with Apex from pool D in their crossover match. The Selects left nothing in the tank and finished the match in two sets, 25-12 and 25-15.

Day Two

Sunday’s games started with the girls in the quarterfinal against the Panthers.  403 dominated the first game for a 25-19 victory, but then the Panthers rallied back in the second with amazing defence and took the set 25-17.  An intense third set followed with 403 falling short early in the game, Purple persevered and fought hard for a 15-13 final score, advancing to the semifinal game.

The semifinal was a two straight set match against the Rhinos. 403 Selects came out with a job to do, and they reached their goal of making the provincial final!  The final match saw 403 face the Pandas again. The determined Pandas made few errors and took the first set 25-18; 403 tried to rally back, but the Panda’s aggressive play defeated the Selects in two straight sets, awarding the 403 Selects the silver medal. The girls had an amazing weekend, have had a spectacular season with two silver and two gold medals to show for it, and are looking forward to Nationals in Regina in two weeks’ time. Thanks to all coaches and parents for the support!
