Volleyball Alberta Premier 1 saw the 403 Selects 15U team in fine form. The lessons and team cohesiveness that we saw grow over the days away in San Mateo were evident on the court as the girls worked together towards victory. Passing, communicating and supporting one another was an amazing site to behold as these girls have been together for not that long in the big scheme of things. Our coaches had obviously used the San Mateo experience and kept it going in practice this past week. The girls had comfortable victories through the round robin taking all three matches in straight sets placing first in the pool. In a marathon day that started with the girls arriving at 7:00 in the morning, our crossover was slated to start at 6:00 pm but did not begin until 6:45pm! Up against a determined SAVC squad, the 403 girls took the first set easily 25-15. Down in the second the girls battled back to take the second set 25-23 in what could be described as a real character victory. This placed the girls in the top 8 of the South Region earning them a berth in Division 1 for Premier 2.

Day two of Premier 1 presented a higher level of competition. They competed against teams that had skill sets more similarly matched to our 403 Selects. The first match was a great start for the games to come. Facing a challenge with Lethbridge Flare, our girls worked together and found success in straight sets once again. You could see them pushing their skills and paying closer attention to the opposing team. The win set up a semi-final match with the Dino’s – the girls’ strongest competition to date. While victory was evasive, you could see the desire to win present itself over the course of the match. It was clear from the rally in the second set that our girls have the spirit in them to fight for victory the next time those two teams come together. The bronze medal match was set, against Stealth from Coaldale, AB. The last match of the day, was a challenge but our 403s fought hard and came back in the third set to earn the bronze medal. Stealth was a formidable opponent and served very well and played strong defensively! Parents upstairs on the rail, were proud to watch our team work together all weekend. This tournament has set the tone for the year, and the girls and the coaches head back to the practice gym to prepare for Premier 2! Well done girls!
