13 U Black and Purple Get Their Feet Wet

Last weekend the 403 Selects 13U teams competed in their first competition in Edmonton. The weekend proved to be a great experience for them to be introduced to the world of club volleyball as well as becoming much closer within the two teams of eight (Purple and Black) and the 403 Selects 13U program.

Day 1

Pool play opened with 403 Purple winning their first match in three sets against the SEAVC Rattlers. In the second match of the day for Team Purple, they lost in two sets to the NAVC Griffins White team and finished pool play with a decisive win over St Paul Rage. This finish put Team Purple in second place in their pool needing to play one extra match against Canuck White to secure their place in Division 1. After beating Canuck White, Team Purple played their fifth match of the day and their crossover match against Edmonton’s Pandas and lost a hard fought game in two sets.

Team Black opened the day with a hard fought three set loss to NAVC Griffins Maroon. They came back to win their next two matches in two sets each against Rhinos Black and Potential VC. Team Black finished second in their pool securing their position in Division 1. Team Black played a tough team in their crossover, they lost the first set but rallied in the second set to force a third set and deciding set against TSAVC Calgary Black, in which TSAVC came out on top.

Day 2

Playoffs began with both teams competing for their chance to finish 9th in the tournament. Both teams had some ups and down. Team Purple won their first match against NAVC Griffins Black and battled it out in their next match against St. Albert Volleyball Club, winning the first set but losing the next one to force a third and deciding set. The third set went in favour of Team Purple winning 16-14, in a nail biting match. The final game for Team Purple was against the Grand Prairie Wolves for 9th place and Team Purple was unable to close out the game successfully and ultimately finishing in 10th place.

Team Black lost their first match of the day in two sets against Grand Prairie Wolves but came out strong winning their next match against Canuck White in two sets. The last two games of the tournament saw the team battling it out against Rhinos White to a 28-26 and 25-21 victory and the final match of the tournament against Dawson’s Creek Volleyball Club, again winning two straight sets, finishing the tournament in 13th place.

Coaches and players alike are very proud of their performance and improvement in this first VA and can’t wait to compete again at VA 2.
