…Was a whole lot of fun!

This past week, the 17U team made the trek south of the border to participate in the SCVA 29th Annual Las Vegas Classic. After a pre-tournament warm-up match against the Elite Volleycats on Friday, the girls began their 152 team tournament Saturday in round robin play finishing second in their pool, sending them to the ‘A’ bracket, allowing them to rally with the top ranked teams.  Facing off against teams from Arizona and Hawaii, round 2 brought more difficult competition, finding the team finishing third on the day, setting up a fantastic final day finish in the top third of the field, placing 53rd overall.  The coaches felt the team became much closer and stronger on the court and that they developed a greater appreciation for the importance of serve receive and defence in general, all qualities that will help them in future tournaments.

Although volleyball was on the agenda, it wasn’t the only main event, as the girls were kept busy with a variety of memorable activities.  From hiking in Red Rock Canyon to enjoying a two-team dinner at the Excalibur with the 18U’s before catching the Blue Man Group at the Monte Carlo, the girls did it all.  They spent their time shopping at outlet malls, walking the strip and exploring the sites and sounds of Vegas, all the while growing closer as a team.  The trip wouldn’t have been complete with out a glam dinner at the top of the Stratosphere and a surprise Valentine’s  ‘403 purple’ Limo ride around old Vegas to see the sites, planned in secret by the coaches.

A huge thank you to the 403 board for allowing the team to travel abroad; to the coaches for all of the time that they have invested; to the parents who travelled with the girls to cheer and provide support and a special thank you to Dave and Stacey Pelland for providing the food for the girls’ lunches!  What a remarkable adventure for the 17u girls!
