The 403 Selects 16U team was more than ready to get the 2017 Volleyball Alberta Indoor season underway on Saturday, February 11th at their home practice courts at Rally Pointe!!   The girls had not yet competed in any pre-season tournaments, leading to much anticipation for chances to put into action all they had been training so far this season.
The 16Us came out strong in their first match against the Canmore Rockies, winning in two sets 25-13 and 25-9 and playing very well as a team.  Next the girls squared off against the Sylvan Lake Wave and again came out on top in two straight. The girls were feeling great and with a nice break to refuel, they enjoyed some off court time together. Their third pool play game was against the feisty Queens team from Red Deer and the girls battled in this one, digging in to earn a 27-25 victory in the first and a solid 25-14 in the second. It was time for the cross over game against the LVC Royals and the 403 team was ready for the challenge!  With the end of the day in sight and a top 8 finish on the line, they started strong and didn’t look back, finishing the day 4-0. Way to go girls!
The second day of competition was going to be a lot tougher and despite their combined efforts, a first game of the day win against the Seven Person Wolves team was not to be…. this time!  The girls rallied back from their slow start though and made each serve and contact count in a 25-19 first set win against the SEAVC Rattlers.  The 16U girls were serving strong and back in their groove in the second set when at 21-8, one of their teammates was injured and sadly had to be taken out via stretcher. The girls, parents and whole venue applauded as our player left.  Thank you to everyone in the volleyball community who offered words of encouragement and support!  Shaken, but undeterred, the girls came out on top against the Rattlers and prepared for a final match against the Cougars.  In a spirited game, the teams traded points and had some great rallies, but the 403s fell a bit short in the end and headed home 6th in the south and anxious for news about their teammate.
There will be lots of great competition in Division 1 ahead next tournament and many more fun team bonding experiences along the way!
Thank you to all of the coaches, parent scorekeepers and cheering fans!
