The 403 Selects 17U team travelled to Nevada to compete in the SCVA 30th annual Las Vegas Classic. Arriving on Thursday, the team spent the first two days exploring different entertainment and activities including a secret pizza place, an adventure down ‘the strip’ and ‘dinner & a show’ – viewing of Cirque du Soleil ‘O’ at the Bellagio. The weather was impeccable during the trip which also made for many breakfasts and lunches by the pool, enjoyed by all.

Tournament Day 1
The Selects opened the first day of pool play strong, beating Solano Legacy 17U 2-0. The next match against Laguna Beach Volleyball Club was a thriller. After dropping the first set, 403 came out strong in game two and closed the set out, forcing a third and deciding game. After many exciting and lengthy rallies, Laguna Beach VC prevailed, winning 15-10. Laguna Beach coaches and parents alike complimented the team on their ability and overall defensive intensity. The final match of the day was against SA Force, a strong opponent and 15th seed entering the tournament. Splitting the first two sets, 403 gained momentum that led into a strong start in the third. SA Force would rally with a late surge, overcoming Selects’ 13-9 third set lead to come back and win 15-13. Despite the result of the match, 403 came out of the match with several valuable learning opportunities.

Tournament Day 2
After a team meeting over lunch in the hotel, the 403 17Us arrived at Basic High School in Henderson, NV determined to continue their strong play from the first day of the tournament. They started the day strong, cruising through the first two opponents of the day’s pool Reef VC 2-0 and Mesa Juniors 2-0. 403 now faced the only other undefeated team in the pool – Rancho Valley 17U Selects from California. Rancho Valley was a strong serving team with a dominant leftside player, and took the first set 25-19. Rancho Valley looked to be pulling away in the second set before strong play at the net sparked a Selects comeback that fell just short, losing 23-25 and the match 0-2. 403 finished the day 2-1, advancing into a semi final in C Tier of playoffs in the final day.

Tournament Day 3
403 now shifted to the morning wave on the final day of playoffs. The Selects matched up against East Side Blaze 17 Black from Arizona. The team experienced a rare slow start to the day, dropping the first set 12-25. 403 refused to quit, going on a late run 7-0 run to tie the second set at 23’s. East Side Blaze would prevail, winning the next two points to take the set 25-23 and the match 2-0.

Overall, the girls had matches where they played the best matches they have this season and learned much about what it takes to compete consistently at a high level.

Coaches are thrilled with the amount of positive team building that the trip provides, returning to Calgary with a now very tight-knit group (parents included) prepping for VA #2 in Edmonton.

A special thank you to all that supported in Vegas (and back home!) with any logistics, food, activities, and more! Everyone had a great trip and is looking forward to the rest of the season.
