The weekend of March 5th and 6th saw ribbons of traffic streaming along Alberta’s major highways in pursuit of some hot volleyball competition. Vehicles chalk full of Alberta women’s U17 and U18 volleyball players, descended upon Edmonton’s University of Alberta sports facilities for the province’s second Premier competition. And the U17 403 Selects were no exception.

Starting the competition Saturday at the Saville Centre, the girls slowly built up their mojo in a confident and steady pattern resulting in two solid wins, earning them first place in their heat.

A win in the crossover game against the U17 Rhinos cinched their top seeding in Division 2 catapulting the team into prime position for some serious competition and fun on Sunday.

Sunday’s competition shifted venues into the heart of U of A’s campus at the state of the art Van Vliet Centre. The iconic sculptural context of the building, turned heads and sparked some spicy design conversation amongst the parents.

Coffees in hand, the parents padded to their seats in the gym’s court 1 where the girls were poised and warmed up to play the NAVC Griffins at 9 a.m. The girls flew into the first set on fire, winning five straight points in a row. With heroic stamina the team played a fabulous match, sadly losing, but excited to charge through to the next game.

The ultimate excitement unfolded during the final match of the tournament against LVC Jr. Kodiaks U18. The girls played neck and neck, taking it to three sets with a solid win in the final set with a score of 15-12.

Elated, hungry, tired, hot and sweaty (thanks to the humid courts), the girls proudly ended the day on a high note, earning 7th place in Division 2. Nice work girls!
