Day One

Our 16s started pool play at the Saville Centre in Edmonton bright and early on Saturday morning with a close game against the NAVC Griffins Black. Both teams played a little rough as they adapted to the 8:00am start and the new facility. Beach stalwart Sarah Heupel was effective for the Griffins in attack. 403 managed to pull out the straight-sets victory, 25-22 & 26-24.

After a game break and a lifting of the morning fog, 403 played Ace of Diamonds Black. Solid passing games from Outside Hitters, Reia Taylor and Haylee Bailey, kept the game close until the separation point. After a two-match break, the final pool game brought a matchup with a well-coached, athletic NOOKS Blue team. The distribution of Kendra Kern kept the 403 defense on alert, but the Selects managed to take it in two. After a first-place pool finish, they went on to win against their preseason scrimmage partners, Panthers, in the crossover game with scores of 25-17 & 25-20. Panthers Shae Sauter and Char Perry scored numerous points for the Coaldale squad.

Day Two

Competition on day 2 started with a quarter-final date with the Dinos. A strong offense led by Megan MacDonald and lefty Edan Wade made for some attacking volleyball. Straight set wins 25-12, 25-17 pushed the 403 Selects into the semis against another familiar opponent, Cougars 16U. The impact of middles Mackenzie Logan and Brooklyn Swain kept the match
close, but 403 was motivated on this day and took it 25-18 & 25-23.

On to the finals against the deep Grande Prairie Wolves team. After a 25-21 first set win, the Wolves were led back by Carly Thomson 19-25 in the second. The girls dug deep in the last set, withstanding the offensive firepower from outside hitter Melissa Hatfield, and managed to come out on top 15-13 as the
VA#2 Div 1 gold medal winners.

Thank you to our opponents, girls, coaches and parents for another excellent weekend of volleyball
both on and off the court.
