16U Training Camp in Strathmore

The 16U Selects had a very productive weekend training camp on February 2nd and 3rd at Holy Cross Collegiate School in Strathmore, AB., culminating with an invitation to Panthers Sunday Funday at Chinook High School in Lethbridge on February 4th.

Friday and Saturday were great opportunities to refine team systems and develop individual skill work. Team time off the court and spending time on goal setting, strategy sessions and game film were also valuable components. The girls enjoyed the overnight bonding time together as well as team dinner at Strathmore Station. Coaches Erin Davis and Darren Perrizolo noted the unity within the group and how fun it was to see some of the true personalities of the girls shine through, which is often missed in a regular practice setting.

Super Bowl Sunday brought an early morning departure on cold winter roads and a beautiful prairie sunrise. The squad, on an invitation from our good friends at Panthers Volleyball Club (Stafford Lake), would be divided into a split squad to play in a 6 team round robin style with Panthers, Rattlers (Medicine Hat) and the Zone 1 Alberta Winter Games team.

It was a rapid-fire tournament with 40-minute matches. The team was divided into 2 squads of six, with the up-tempo, strong defense of “Team Erin” (with a special guest right side covering for recovering Lara Ironside) and the hard-hitting, aggressive blocking style of “Team Darren”. It was another great chance to get some quality court time in! It was an interesting format that the girls really seemed to enjoy. It made for very fast paced play. The final gold medal match was played between the two 403 16U teams with the Team Erin emerging as in the 1-set final with a 15-11 win over Team Darren.

Thank you to the Panthers for hosting such a unique and exciting event. Best of luck to Panthers, Rattlers, LVC in their first Premier and to Zone 1 at the Alberta Winter Games!
