16U Provincials 2010The 16U 403 Selects headed into the Provincial Championship looking to prove that their 3rd place finish in AVA Premier #1 was no fluke. The athletes had their sights set high going into this tournament on May 1st and 2nd in Sherwood Park. Their controlled, but dominant play through pool play was a clear indicator of this; taking 1st in their grouping. These excellent performances through the tournaments’ initial games earned the athletes a crossover match against the Saints-Black who proved to be a solid defensive unit. The Selects were in tough being down 21-13 in the first set, but battled back point by point to take the set 30-28. They followed this thriller up with an impressive second set solidifying their spot in the top 8.

The morning quarterfinal had the Selects lined up against season rival Knights from Cold Lake. As always, it was an excellent match that saw a lot of great attacks and amazing defensive plays from both teams. 403 edged the Knights two straight to move on to the semifinal against NAVC Pandas. The semifinal was an absolute nail biting clash between two highly talented offensive units; really a match for the ages. NAVC ending up clinching the victory 15-13 in the third set leaving the Selects thirsting for a medal in the bronze medal match against Fog Storm. In their final match of the day, the 403 athletes snatched the lead from the first point and never looked back. With a convincing two-set victory the Selects re-staked their position amongst the podium finishers.

Coaches Kirsten McLennan and J.B. McLean couldn’t have been more proud of the athletes’ performance overall through the entire weekend. And a special thanks to Todd Herman for his help and support through the athletes’ final 5 matches of the tournament. His presence and thoughts were appreciated by all. Congrats to the 16U athletes!!!
