Day 1

Va Premier #2 was held in Calgary this weekend and the games for the 403 15’s were held at the beautiful Genesis Centre. Power pool play included the Premier 1 finalists from northern and southern Alberta. The Selects had quite the challenge ahead of them. First game, against DCVC Dynamite (Dawson Creek), began with a bang as the level of play was faster and unrelenting than typical day 1s. 403 edged out the B.C. team with scores 25-21 and 26-24. In game two, Seven Persons Wolves, unforced errors and lack of focus lead to 24-26 loss in set 1. The girls stepped up to win the second set 25-12 and 15-10 in the third. Game three in pool play was a matchup with the north winners, SPVC Blizzard (Grand Prairie). Competition was very well matched and made for exciting play. The game went to three sets: 15-25, 25-20 and a dramatic 15-13 third. The girls finished the day winning their crossover game against Nook Blue (Edmonton) which set them up for quarter finals the following day.

Day 2

First game of day two in the top 8, pitted Wolves Red (Grand Prairie) against the Selects. Outplayed and unfocused, 403 very much played the part of the nail in a 15-25 hammering. Once again, the 403 Selects dug deep winning the second set 25-13 and the third set 15-11. With the 15’s firing on all cylinders, the second game versus Canada West Black was taken in two sets of excellent play. The girls’ defense and attack were catalysts in the win. With a strong motivation and mental focus for the gold medal game, the 403 Selects 15’s were up against P1 finalists Seven Persons Wolves again. With exhilarating play from both teams, the girls achieved their goal to finish in first place taking gold in two sets against the classy team from Seven Persons. A great weekend with tremendous support from parents and board members, great officiating and well-played matches. On to Premier 3 in Edmonton!
