There was wonderful volleyball being played at the 3rd 15U AVA Premier tournament held in Edmonton this past weekend. Competition in the Northlands Expo Centre was fierce as teams begin ramping up for the late season push. The 403 Selects 15U girls had a challenging task holding on to the top spot in the province.

Day One

First game of the tournament was up against the NAVC Griffins (Edmonton). It set the tone for the level of power pool competition that the 403 girls would need to face. It took three sets to determine the game in 403’s favour. The first set was a 25-17 win, followed by 18-25 loss and ultimately a 15-11 win. The second match, against Canada West Black (Calgary), saw the girls taking the first set with a 25-18 win. The second set began with the Selects absorbing a 2-8 deficit, before showing the grit and resilience necessary to storm back 25-9. The third game up against Seven Persons Wolves saw the fourth matchup of the season against the VA2 finalists. The result ended with two sets at 25-13 and 25-18. With a strong finish for day one of the AVA Premier #3, in the crossover against Fog Gold (Edmonton), the 403 Selects 15U girls finished confidently with 25-5 and 25-10 scores.

Day Two

In semi final action, the 15’s were up against EKVC Avalanche (Cranbrook). The strong defence and powerful attacks of the well-coached B.C. Squad pushed the team, but 403 looked determined from the start. Both sets went neck and neck until the Calgary squad prevailed with scores of 25-17 and 25-19. In quarter finals, the 15’s met up with NAVC Griffins (Edmonton) for a second time in the tournament. The team was on a mission and saw the 403 girls take the game in two sets again with a similar result of 25-18 and 25-19 scores. The gold medal match against SPVC Blizzard (Grand Prairie), whom 403 played against in Premier #1, was a fantastic battle. The first set loss at 18-25 was a well-earned win for the Blizzard, with too many unforced errors compounding issues. As shown many times this season, the Selects showed ability to play in many different situations. In the second set, a true team effort led to a gritty 25-21 win. In the epic finish with some of the most exciting volleyball of the day, the 15U 403 Selects took their third gold medal of the season with a third set score of 15-12.

After a well deserved weekend, the girls are focused and preparing for Provincials. Thank you for yet another exceptional AVA Premier tournament experience!
