The 15U 2018 club season wrapped up with Volleyball Canada’s Nationals, held at the Edmonton Expo Center from Thursday, May 17 to Saturday, May 19.

Day 1 was amazing for the 403 Selects.  They won their first match against Canuck (AB) (25-21, 25-15), their second against BC’s Performance (25-19, 25-15), and their third against Manitoba’s Provincial Champion Shock (# 1 Team in MB – 25-20, 25-21).

After going undefeated and coming out first in Thursday’s preliminary pool, the Selects were re-pooled and kept up their energy, determination and drive.  They started out strong, winning 25-16 and 25-14 against Ontario’s # 1 seeded team and Provincial Champion, Storm Monsoon.  Both teams displayed excellent sportsmanship and traded warm-up shirts after the game.  This team would go on to win the gold medal at Nationals.  Game two against Calgary’s Mount Royal University started out rough, and the girls struggled against MRU’s strong net play and serving, resulting in their first set loss of the tournament, 17-25.  They came out determined the second game and won 25-13.  A well-played third set resulted in a 15-10 victory for 403.  Game three was played against Durham Attack Black from Toronto (On # 7).  403 won the first set 25-20 and the second 25-14, putting them in the top of their power pool, and in the top eight teams of the nation!

The playoffs of the third day started at 9:30 am.  403 faced Markham’s Revolution Merge (ON # 3) for this all important game, and although they played well, they just couldn’t match Merge’s powerful serves and feisty defense.   Scores of 20-25, 25-23, and 6-15 resulted in 403’s first loss of the tournament, but also the end of play for them.

With a 6-1 record, the 15U’s had an amazing showing at this Super-Nationals.  Not only did they represent their club well, but also their province and country with an impressive display of talent and heart.  An overall finish of 5 place out of 154 15U teams at Nationals and the highest ranked Alberta team is an incredible accomplishment.

Congratulations and thank-you to the coaches, athletes, and parents for an incredible season!
